More ……Jonathan & Elihu Ashley -Loyalist ancestors of Thomas Heit

My fourth great grandfather, (Johnathan’s son) Elihu Ashley, stayed in Deerfield MA and became a doctor. He wrote a diary from 1773 to 1775 in which he described the sawing in half of the liberty pole in Deerfield. His diary was published by the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. The population of Deerfield were more than half Loyalists, and the residents were not forced to leave, as they were in other areas. The Ashley family remained in Deerfield until 1854, when Elihu’s grandson moved for Deerfield Twp, Chickasaw County, Iowa.
