Loyalist Day Banquet
with Special Guest Speaker Barry MacKenzie
May 18th (6:30 pm)
The New Brunswick Branch invites its membership and the public at-large
to its annual Loyalist Day Banquet, May 18th at the Union Club, 125
Germain Street in Saint John. The Lieutenant-Governor of New Brunswick,
Jocelyne Roy Vienneau will be in attendance. Cocktails will be served
at 6:30 pm with punch courtesy of the Association. A three-course
dinner begins at 7:00 pm: salad, chicken with white wine sauce and a
medley of vegetables, and chocolate cheesecake with a vanilla chantilly
cream round out the menu. Tickets are $40 each and can be reserved by
calling Jim McKenzie at 506-832-5334.
Our guest speaker for the occasion is Barry MacKenzie of the Monarchist
League of Canada, who will deliver a talk titled "Expressions of
Loyalty: The Royal Family in the Loyalist Province, 1794-2012."
MacKenzie will discuss the long history of royal tours in the province
beginning in the 1790s, when Edward, Duke of Kent, worked among and was
entertained by the Loyalist founders of the province, and working all
the way up to the latest visit, by another son of a sovereign, Charles,
Prince of Wales.
And of course, as per our earlier bulletin, we would like remind our
members and friends to come celebrate the arrival of the Loyalist
refugees in Saint John at this year's Loyalist Day ceremony in the
Market Square Atrium. St. Mary's Band will deliver a concert at
10:15 am, followed by remarks from both provincial and municipal
dignitaries and the reading of the Loyalist Day proclamation. Members
of our branch will be present in period dress, and Saint John's
official birthday cake will be cut and shared with those in attendance
following the ceremony. At 12:00 noon the guns of the 3rd Field
Artillery Regiment (The Loyal Company) will fire their customary 21-gun
salute and the New Brunswick Museum will also be open free of admission
courtesy of International Museums Day.
