Past Meetings

Fall 2023 Meeting: Our Fall meeting was on Saturday September 30 at 10:30 am. Our presentation was on the Boer Wars and more historical points. We met at Knox Presbyterian Church with a catered lunch. The presentation was recorded and is available upon request to Suzanne at s_e_davidson(@)hotmail.com. The presentation was concluded with a currently appropriate quote.

Spring 2023 Meeting: Our Spring meeting was on Saturday, April 29 at 12 noon. We  met at Knox Presbyterian Church at 3704  37 St SW for the presentation and business part of the meeting and then moved to the Richmond Pub for lunch. The Pub address is 3919 Richmond Road SW. The presentation was on the 2013 Calgary Flood and the mitigations being worked on for Sunnyside and Hillhurst and other areas.

Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Medal Presentation: On Friday, December 9, 2022 the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Medals were presented to a number of members of the UELAC Calgary Branch. These members included Roy Smith, Charlie Lund, David Hongisto, Bill Simpson, Ian McIlreath, Wayne Hovestad, Bernice Aucoin, Rory Cory, Linda McLelland, Pat Brown, Barbara Hongisto, Ivy Trumpour, Suzanne Davidson, Sharon Terray and Karen Stevenson. At this gathering David Hongisto was presented with a Certificate of Appreciation for his long service for the Branch.

Fall 2022 Meeting:  Sunday, November 6 at 1:00 pm Mountain time at the RCMP office in northeast Calgary. The address is 7575   8th St NE. This was a combined in-person and virtual meeting over Zoom. There was be a charge of $25 for the meal.

Summer 2022 Picnic: On Sunday, August 28 we rented a shelter at South Glenmore Park for a picnic. Unfortunately, that was one of this summer’s wet and cool days. We do plan to try again next year.

Spring 2022 Meeting: Sunday, May 1 at 1:00 pm Mountain time at the Alberta Family History Library at 712   16th Avenue NW. The topic was Loyalist recipes from the book “Loyalists at Table, 18th Century Loyalist Recipes for the 21st Century Kitchen” compiled by the St Lawrence Branch of UELAC. This was a combined in-person and virtual meeting.

Fall 2021 Meeting: Sunday, October 24 at 2:00 pm Mountain time. This will be virtual. Our topic is the research on the Butler Homestead in Niagara-on-the-Lake and the Butler’s Rangers. this was presented by one of the UELAC Scholarship winners, Denise McGuire. A recording of this meeting is available upon request.

On September 3, 2021 three of our members visited Alix, Alberta. This visit was to find out more about the town and find the burial stones for Irene Parlby and her family. A summary of our visit is included.

Summer 2021 Meeting:  Sunday, June 27 at 3:00 pm Mountain time. This was a virtual meeting. Our presentation was on the Western numbered Treaties by George Colpitts of the University of Calgary. This follows the presentation on the Upper Canada Treaties of March.

Spring 2021 Meeting: Sunday, March 7 at 2:00 pm Mountain time. This meeting was Virtual. We will have a presentation by Nathan Tidridge on The land transfer of the Natives to Loyalist settlers who were arriving in the future Upper Canada in the late 1700s.  Nathan was awarded a Governor General’s award for teaching history in 2020.

Fall 2020 Meeting: Sunday, November 1 at 3:00 pm Mountain time. This meeting was virtual.  Leslie Bieber from The Memory Project gave us a summary of his service in the Navy and Air Force over the years in Canada and abroad. This was also our Annual General Meeting since there was no meeting in the Spring.

Spring 2020 meeting on May 31 was cancelled due to COVID-19

Fall 2019 Meeting:  Sunday, October 20 at 12:30 pm at Sheraton Cavalier Hotel 2620   32 Ave NE, Calgary. Cost is $45. Our presentation will be by Calgary Historian Harry Sanders. The video of the Plaque Dedication at the Mountain View Cemetery in Lethbridge will screened starting at 12:30.

Fall 2019 Meeting Notice

Lethbridge Plaque Dedication: Sunday, September 8 at Mountain View Cemetery in Lethbridge. A plaque reading’ Herein lie descendants of United Empire Loyalists’ was unveiled at the cemetery. The known descendants are Dr. Jesse Bigelow, Sylvester, Benson and JM Hughson and Jean Thompson.

Spring 2019 Meeting:  Sunday, April 14 at 1:00 pm at Sheraton Cavalier Hotel 2620 32 Ave NE, Calgary. Cost will be $40. Our presentation will be by John Hurdman. A set of bylaws was presented and passed during the business meeting portion.

Fall 2018 Meeting:  Sunday, November 25 1:00 pm at Sheraton Cavalier Hotel 2620 32 Ave NE, Calgary. Cost will be $40 with menu to be confirmed. We will have a presentation by Shirlee Matheson on a Calgary related topic. Shirlee gave a presentation on Calgary airport and Fred McCall in October of 2016.

Winter 2018 Newsletter

Spring 2018 Meeting: 90th Anniversary Celebration Sunday, April 22 1:00 pm at Sheraton Cavalier. Cost was $40 for baked chicken supreme with salad and dessert dinner.
