Biography : From the publication "Into the High Country" by Adelaide Leitch: Dufferin's first settler came following not the trail of the Yellow Briar but of the Black Walnut and he was not Irish, but Pennsylvania Dutch. The Dufferin Area lay north of the range of the Nut Tree which his country men traditionally bought out as an indication of good farming land. Around 1806, ten arried at the headwaters. William Franks was a shadowy figure who steps fleetingly into Dufferin history and then vanishes forever. He built the first log cabin near the spot where Market Hill (later Mono Mills) would stand. He owned Lot 10 Concession 6 Caledon West. They had 13 children.
