Enlistment Date : The database, Loyalists in the American Revolution Vol. I: Miscellaneous Records (no further sources given) states that John Dennis, wheelwright, and Henry Dennis, shipwright, jointed the British Army in 1778 (List of Men from Pennsylvania who joined the British Army all now or late of the township of Solebury). Henry was John's father.

Loyalist line to Patrick John Adams

John DENNIS, UEL, shipwright, born 1758 Philadelphia, died 25 Aug 1832 during a cholera outbreak in York (Toronto). With his father, Henry, fought on the British side during the American Revolution and, as a consequence, lost their lands in Philadelphia and New Jersey. Married in New York in 1781 to Martha BROWN, widow of Surgeon McLANEY or McLARY of the Royal Navy. Took up arms against the French in St Lucia, 1783. Settled in Shelburne and then Beaver Harbour, Nova Scotia later that year. By 1789 living in Pennfield, New Brunswick. Returned to the US in 1795 to farm in Alexandria, Virginia, but disliked the politics and returned to settle near the River Humber in Upper Canada, on a farm named Button Wood or Buttonwood. Granted 500 acres of land by the British government in return for building a ship at Kingston dockyards for use during the War of 1812.

Rebecca DENNIS, born likely near York in circa 1796, married James RICHARDSON (later first bishop of the Methodist Episcopal church of Canada, 1791-1875) on 31 January 1813 at Kingston, died at the RICHARDSON home, Clover Hill (St Joseph Street), Toronto on 29 March 1858.

Margaret Isabella RICHARDSON, born ca. 1831 in Kingston and married barrister John ROAF, QC in Toronto 28 June 1849. Died in Toronto 8 November 1883.

James Richardson ROAF, KC, barrister, born 14 August 1851 in Toronto and died there 9 October 1947. Married Harriet Eliza LEE (1850-1927, daughter of Joseph LEE and Maria SHANKS, who settled in York in 1832).

Prof. Herbert Eldon ROAF, George Holt Professor of Physiology, University of Liverpool, born Toronto 3 Aug 1881, died in Liverpool 21 Sep 1952. Married in Liverpool 7 July 1908 to Beatrice Sophie HERDMAN (1883-1979)
