2011 John Stuart Commemoration

On Sunday, August 14, 2011, the Lower Burial Ground Restoration Society invited the citizenry of Kingston to St. Paul’s Church to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the death of the Rev. Dr. John Stuart, the first Anglican missionary in the “Western Settlement” [now Ontario] after the American Revolution. His contribution to the life of the United Empire Loyalists cannot be overstated: 1785 founded the first school west of the Ottawa River (forerunner of Kingston Collegiate and Vocational Institute); chaplain to the Legislative Assembly; considered to be the “Father of the Episcopal Church in this Province”. You can’t talk about Loyalists in Kingston and area without thinking about John Stuart.
