"The evidence does not suggest that the Executive Council met in separate meetings for its "land" and "state" work but, rather, that two separate agendas were presented at each meeting at which there were both land and state matters to be discussed. The proceedings and decisions were then recorded in different minute books. The line of distinction between "land" and "state" issues was not always clearly maintained in the two sets of minutes. Matters relating to particular land grants, leases and associated topics are documented in the land minute books. Land-related issues of a broad or policy nature, on the other hand, were generally considered to be "state" matters and are found documented in the "state" minute books. As a result, one finds records of land-granting policy, of the acquisition and distribution of Indian lands, of military reserves (ordnance lands transferred to civil control), and similar topics documented in the state minute books." -- from Library and Archives Canada, description found in Archives, State Minute Books of the Executive Council

Joseph Brant,(Thayendanegea) born in 1742, was a Mohawk chief who helped gain Indian support for the British in the French and Indian War between 1754 and 1763. From 1763 to 1776, Brant and his tribe assisted the British in the American Revolution by attacking the American settlers. After the Revolution, unable to negotiate a land settlement with the American government, Brant obtained a land grant in Canada and he and his followers settled in the area now known as Brantford, Ontario, which was named after him. The last years of his life were spent seeing to the welfare of his people and translating the Bible into the Mohawk language. He died in 1807.

These microfilms consist of correspondence, journals, accounts and other records of Daniel Claus, his son William Claus, and his grandson Warren Claus, together with papers of Alexander McKee, Deputy Superintendent of Indian Affairs, 1794-1799, and Prideaux Selby (d. 1813), Assistant Secretary of Indian Affairs, 1797-1809. The McKee and Selby papers were acquired by William Claus when he succeeded McKee in office. The Claus family papers also include some of William Claus, Jr. (d. 1824), who served with the 54th Regiment, in Europe, Jamaica, South Africa and India; and John Claus (d. 1812) who served with the 84th Regiment. Volumes 1-12 and 13-19 form two overlapping series in basically chronological sequence. Commissions and land records (volume 20), notebooks and memoranda (volumes 21-22) and biographical and genealogical notes (volume 23) were largely separated from the main series. English translations of letters in Mohawk found within the first series of correspondence form volume 24, while the "Claus-Haldimand" correspondence relating to the use of Indians in warfare, 1777-1784, is found in volume 25 with transcriptions in volume 26. |

E 195 J63 J64 2008. | CD-ROM | Collection comprises Papers of Sir William Johnson, vols. I-XIV; The papers of Sir William Johnson addenda,1979; Day calendar of papers; Johnson papers in The documentary history of New York State, vols. 1, 2, and 4; and Johnson papers in Documents relative to the colonial history of New York State, vols. 6-8 .
This collection of Johnson's papers represents a significant number of Johnson's personal and business papers. The collection consists of several thousand individual documents ranging from bills and receipts to correspondence to household inventories. The collection includes materials seized by the State during the American Revolution and other materials acquired subsequently to supplement the collection.
Included in this collection are correspondence, bills, accounts, records of public proceedings, official and military reports regarding Johnson as a land developer, records relating to Johnson's activities as a fur trader and his activities as Superintendent of Indian Affairs. Also included are papers relating to trade with the Indians; papers relating to Johnson's activities during the French and Indian War, particularly the Battle of Lake George in 1755; the construction of Johnson's homes, Fort Johnson and Johnson Hall; the erection of public buildings for use by the county seat in Johnstown, N.Y. and other papers reflecting Johnson's role as a prominent figure on the colonial frontier.
The collection also contains materials relating to Johnson's activities as a land agent for his uncle Sir Peter Warren. Johnson acted as Warren's agent shortly after his immigration to America and managed Warren's Mohawk Valley lands.
The collection was badly damaged in the 1911 New York State Capitol fire. Those documents that survived were published as Johnson Papers (see publications note). A published calendar of the collection was issued prior to the fire and the absence of particular documents is easy to ascertain (see publications note). The State Library holds other papers of Johnson and his family which are cataloged separately.
Note Sir William Johnson was a wealthy land owner and trader, controlling most of the lands in New York State's Mohawk Valley. Johnson served as the Superintendent of Indian Affairs and was appointed to the New York Colony Governor's Council. In 1755 he defeated a superior French force at the Battle of Lake George and was subsequently awarded a hereditary baronetcy. Johnson's relations with the Iroquois resulted in his gaining political and economic prominence. He was instrumental in relieving tensions between Native Americans and European settlers. Johnson established the city of Johnstown, N.Y. and was successful in obtaining its designation as the county seat of Tryon County. Johnson died at Johnson Hall, his baronial estate,in Johnstown in 1774 and is buried in Johnstown.

Series consists of the petitions and related records submitted to the Executive Council Office of the Province of Upper Canada from 1791 to 1841 and to the Executive Council Office of the Province of Canada from 1841 to 1867. The arrangement of the Upper Canada Land Petitions preserves the original alpha-numeric reference assigned by the Clerk of the Executive Council. This alpha-numeric filing system, established in the late 1790s, is based on a close correlation between the petitions and the land minute books (available as Special Collections - Microfilm FC 161 C22 1991). The alpha-numeric references are based on the initial letter of the petitioners surname, or corporate name (the "bundle letter") and the sequence in which the petition was presented to the land committee (the "petition number"). Following the union of Upper and Lower Canada in 1841, the Clerk of the Executive Council of the Province of Canada continued the filing system developed in Upper Canada. The petition numbers reflect the order in which cases were considered and decided upon by the land committee. Within the series itself, each volume of petitions is prefaced by a list of petitioners. | ||
